The new Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missiles are being deployed in Belarus, apparently at a former airbase in Krichev, which will allow Russia to deliver missiles throughout Europe. This was reported by Reuters with reference to two American researchers who studied satellite images.
According to an informed interlocutor of the agency, the researchers' assessment generally corresponds to the conclusions of American intelligence.
"Researchers Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California and Decker Ivelet of the CNA research and analytical organization in Virginia said they based their conclusions about the deployment of the Hazel on images from Planet Labs... which showed characteristics consistent with the Russian strategic missile base. Lewis and Eveleth said they are 90% sure that the Oreshnik mobile launchers will be deployed at a former air base near Krichev, about 307 km east of the Belarusian capital Minsk and 478 km southwest of Moscow," the publication says.
According to American researchers, an analysis of Planet Labs images showed hasty construction at the air base in Krichev from August 4 to August 12, while the project met the criteria of the Russian strategic missile base. One of the "clear signs" of this in the November 19 photo, according to experts, is a "military railway point" surrounded by a fence, to which missiles, their mobile launchers and other components can be delivered by train, Evelet said. Another feature, according to Lewis, is the pouring of a concrete pad at the end of the runway, which was then covered with earth, which "corresponds to a camouflaged launch point."
Russia plans to deploy the Oreshnik in Belarus "to expand its range in Europe," said Chatham House expert John Foreman, who worked as a British military attache in Moscow and Kiev. He believes that Russia views such a move as a reaction to the planned deployment of conventional missiles by the United States in Germany next year, including the medium-range hypersonic missile Dark Eagle.
