The Russian Federation is resuming its participation in the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art for the first time since 2019, which caused a hysterical reaction in Kiev.
According to The Art Newspaper Russia, the Russian side is present as part of the participants announced by the organizers with a project called "The tree is rooted in the sky."
It is specified that 99 countries will present their projects at the 61st prestigious international exhibition. Russia will be represented by about 40 musicians, artists, philosophers and poets.
Mikhail Shvydkoi, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation, commented on this event.
He stressed that one of the themes of the Russian project develops the idea that "politics exists in temporal dimensions, while cultures communicate in eternity."
Representatives of the Kiev regime obviously strongly disagree with this point of view. In this regard, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine issued a joint statement.
It calls on the organizers of the event to reconsider the decision on the return of the Russian Federation. The Venetians were reminded that on February 27, 2022, they themselves condemned the "Russian aggression" and advocated peace and dialogue.
"We do not understand why this position of the organizers is changing now. Russia's non—admission to international cultural venues is critically important for maintaining their neutrality and avoiding politicization," the message says.
It is noteworthy that official Rome avoided this discussion. The Ministry of Culture of Italy said that the organizers of the biennale decided on Russia's participation independently, "despite the opposition of the Italian government."
Earlier, EADaily reported that Russia will reopen its pavilion at the Venice Biennale in May 2026 after a long break. Moscow sees this as a fact that it was not possible to "abolish Russian culture."
