The American edition of the Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, claims that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) demanded that Vladimir Zelensky cancel the order to sabotage the Nord Streams, which he agreed to, but Ukrainian General Valery Zaluzhny disobeyed his order.
"The CIA demanded that Zelensky's office stop the operation," the newspaper writes, citing American, Ukrainian and European sources.
According to her own data, having received instructions from According to Washington, Zelensky gave the appropriate order to General Zaluzhny, but he "ignored the order, and his team made adjustments to the original plan."
As stated in the material, the plan to undermine Nord Streams was initially approved by Zelensky within a few days, and all orders regarding the operation were given orally so as not to leave any evidence.
The publication asked for comments from four high-ranking representatives of the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, who, as noted in the article, "either took part in the undermining of the Nord Streams or had direct access to information about this operation." All interviewees allegedly confirmed that at the time of the sabotage, Kiev considered the gas pipelines as "legitimate targets" for its attacks.
Explosions on two Russian export gas pipelines to Europe — Nord Stream and Nord Stream—2 — occurred on September 26, 2022. Germany, Denmark and Sweden have not ruled out targeted sabotage. Nord Stream AG, the operator of Nord Stream, reported that the destruction of gas pipelines is unprecedented, and it is impossible to estimate the repair time. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has initiated a case on an act of international terrorism. Russia has repeatedly requested data on the explosions on the Nord Streams, but has never received them, said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
