After the jump in gasoline and diesel prices, Finns massively went to neighboring Sweden for fuel, where prices are much lower.
"There are always cars at the fuel stations in Haparanda on a normal weekday. Judging by the license plates, at least half came to the Swedish side from Finland, where gasoline and diesel prices have been higher than usual in recent days," Yle writes.
Due to the Iranian crisis and the rise in oil prices in Finland, fuel prices have risen, while in Sweden they managed to keep it almost at the same level.
"On Wednesday afternoon, the price of gasoline (AI-95) in Haparanda was at the lowest level — 16.74 crowns per liter, which is 1.58 euros at the current rate of the crown. In Finland, the average price of the corresponding fuel on Wednesday exceeded 1.9 euros per liter," the Finnish edition continues.
"I don't refuel now in Finland without an urgent need," a resident of Finland, Katri Malinen-Metso, told the publication.
According to her, there are always a lot of Finns at Haparanda gas stations and there were even congestion.
Hannah Kalenoya, Chief Transport Specialist at the Finnish Chamber of Commerce, explained that the price difference in Sweden and Finland is explained by different tax levels and the wholesale system.
"In Sweden, after the energy crisis of 2022, the fuel tax and the obligation to distribute renewable fuels were reduced," Yle noted.
