US Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised the issue of the release of an American citizen and former Marine Robert Gilman during talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on July 23, Reuters reported, citing a source.

According to the agency, Washington is seeking Gilman's release so that he can receive urgent medical care. A White House official told Reuters that the White House has repeatedly tried to return Gilman to the United States.

Gilman has been imprisoned since 2022 in Russia. According to Reuters, according to relatives and human rights activists, the marine may be in serious condition and is allegedly fed through a probe.
