Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze was outraged by the words of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who expressed hope for "correcting the behavior" of Tbilisi. Kobakhidze considered such a tone unacceptable for a sovereign country.
"Georgia is not a naughty schoolboy who was left for the second year and is waiting for re-education. Georgia is a worthy sovereign state," Kobakhidze said.
At the same time, he confirmed Tbilisi's interest in returning to a strategic partnership with the United States, but on terms of mutual respect and equality.
The prime minister directly linked the deterioration of relations with the policy of the previous US presidential administration, accusing it of putting pressure on Georgia.
On June 3, at a hearing in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, Rubio said that the United States had received a signal from Georgia about its desire to improve bilateral relations and had already received an answer about what actions needed to be taken to do this. At the same time, Rubio stressed that all issues related to Georgia's political course, which previously caused concern to the United States, remain relevant.
The Secretary of State also added that the White House expects not only to improve bilateral relations, but also to change the behavior of the Georgian authorities on a number of issues of concern to Washington.
