The aircraft of the Armed Forces of Spain, on board of which was the Minister of Defense Margarita Robles, encountered interference in the GPS system in the airspace near the Kaliningrad region, Reuters reports. Thus, NATO continues to escalate the information and psychological situation around the Russian exclave in the Baltic.
The plane with Robles on board was en route to Lithuania as part of a NATO mission. In addition to the minister, family members of Spanish pilots who participated in the NATO air defense mission on the eastern flank of the alliance were on the plane.
"An attempt was made to jam the GPS signal, but since an encrypted system was installed on our aircraft, there was no interference," a spokesman for the Spanish Ministry of Defense said.
According to the planned visit, today, on September 24, Minister Robles is to hold a bilateral meeting with her Lithuanian counterpart Dovile Shakalene at Siauliai Airbase.
EADaily adds that Finland, as a new NATO member, claims that Russia uses GPS jamming in the Baltic region to protect its oil ports, military facilities and other strategic facilities from drone attacks from the territory of Ukraine. Moscow denies these accusations, insisting that it does not interfere with the operation of communication networks and satellite communications.
