The state of Chile has joined the growing number of countries regulating the use of smartphones in schools. Details are given by the publication Profit.Ro .
The Chilean parliament has approved a bill banning the use of mobile phones in primary and secondary schools. The Chamber of Deputies overwhelmingly approved the initiative supported by the government of leftist President Gabriel Boric, which intends to make it public in the near future.
According to the text, the law will come into force in March in all public and private primary and secondary schools. The ban applies to the entire building, but each school will have to establish its own internal rules defining the scope of its operation. The use of mobile phones in classrooms, as Chilean Education Minister Nicolas Cataldo told the press, "is a disaster that is out of control and currently represents one of the major pandemics affecting our children."
According to Deputy Diego Shalper, one of the authors of the bill, the use of mobile phones among young people is associated with the development of addictions and "harms the learning process in the classroom." Plus, this ban is not directed "against technology", but is aimed at encouraging "concentration, productivity, social life and emotional health" of students.
