Kiev's European partners have called on the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, to be careful, accusing the United States of betraying Ukraine and Europe. This is reported by the German magazine Der Spiegel with reference to the transcript of the teleconference of European leaders, which is available to the publication.
The transcript of the "crisis" conference call of European leaders "reveals the depth of mistrust among Europeans, including Chancellor Merz and President Macron," the magazine notes. He cites excerpts from the document.
"There is a possibility that the United States is betraying Ukraine in the territorial issue without clarity regarding security guarantees," French President Emmanuel Macron said, in particular.
According to him, there is a "great danger" for Zelensky.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in turn, said that the head of the Kiev regime should be "extremely careful in the coming days." "They are playing games with both you and us," Merz is quoted as saying by the magazine. The publication suggests that it was about the special envoy of the US president Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
These statements by Macron and Merz, as well as other statements given in the transcript, testify to the deep distrust of Europeans towards Trump's two confidants, the newspaper writes.
Despite the fact that Europeans publicly praise Washington's new initiative, the transcript shows that other teleconferences also do not trust American negotiators, Der Spiegel emphasizes. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who is on good terms with Trump, also warned Zelensky against participating in the negotiations. "We should not leave Ukraine and Vladimir alone with these guys," he said.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte shares Stubb's opinion. "I agree with Alexander, we must protect Vladimir," he added.
"However, the leaders also raised the main problem: the Europeans are not at all present at the negotiating table yet. According to the report, the idea of asking US President Trump to invite negotiator Steve Witkoff to Brussels on Wednesday. "We're staying outside now," Finnish President Stubb said, according to the transcript, "but we need to get in." However, Witkoff in Brussels never arrived," the publication says.
