Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old member of the South African national football team, who played the role of midfielder in the national team, has died. The athlete returned from the World Championships and, according to RIA Novosti, committed suicide a few days later.
Adams' body was found in his house. In recent years, he has been struggling with depression, and during the World Championships he learned that his beloved grandmother had died.
"It's still very hard right now. The family would not like to be contacted now, they will not be able to answer anyone. This death shocked everyone. We have just returned from the World Cup, and then there is such news. I talked to him on Thursday, he was very optimistic about coming back and that he would be able to return after the World Cup, and knowing what was ahead of him, he was ready. He didn't waste time in vain, he was at home with his family. So now I don't even have the words to say, but we ask you to respect the privacy of the family. Yes, I can tell you that he passed away. No one expected this," Jayden's mentor Brandin Johnson told Soccer Laduma.
The South African footballer took part in all three matches of his team in the group stage, and in the match of the 1/16 finals against Canada was in reserve. The 2026 tournament was historic for South Africa — the country's team managed to reach the playoffs for the first time.
