Tajikistan: Situation on border with Afghanistan makes CSTO take actions

Tajikistan stands for empowerment of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon said at a meeting with the CSTO defense ministers on June 4 in Dushanbe.

“CSTO is one of the important factors of peace in the region as forms an effective security belt around the common space,” the president said.

CSTO Council of Defense Ministers (Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan) convened in Dushanbe on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the situation on the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border is growing tense and already requires coordinated military and military technical actions, said Minister of Defense Lt. General Mirzo Sherali.

“Tension on our border affects the security in the region… I assure that with your supports, we will be consistently implementing the tasks set to us,” Lt. General Mirzo Sherali said.  The minister believes that the participation of the CSTO countries in the May 9 Victory Parade in Moscow inspires with hope for an effective and combined resistance to any threat or challenge.

Before the meeting, Defense Minister of Russia, Army General Sergey Shoygu met with President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon behind the closed doors.
