Nicaragua invites Russia to take part in a project to build a new canal between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. This was stated by the special representative of the President of Nicaragua for cooperation with the Russian Federation Laureano Ortega Murillo.
"Also, as part of the project, we are already working on the construction of a new port from the Caribbean Sea. The necessary port from the Pacific side exists, so we are working to increase its capacity. Only then we will proceed directly to the construction of the canal. We expect that the project will steadily progress in the coming years and, of course, we invite Russian friends to take part in it," Murillo said, quoted by TASS.
According to the Special Representative, on November 19, the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, presented the new route of the canal at the Latin America—China summit for business communities in Managua. As part of the new project, rounds of negotiations are also being held with the country's partners around the world, in particular with Chinese ones.
"We also invite Russian companies so that they can study the project of this route, develop its feasibility study and move towards implementation," the Special Representative added.
It is noted that there are no specific deadlines for the implementation of the project yet. The new channel, which will connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, will be an alternative to the Panama Canal. The project envisages that it will be wider, and, accordingly, its capacity will be significantly greater.
