No longer fantastic: the first teleportation in history was carried out in the USA

American physicists from Northwestern University (NWU) for the first time carried out quantum teleportation at a distance of 30 km using a conventional optical communication line. Moreover, the teleportation took place at the moment when the line was actively used for Internet connection, the press service of the university reported.

"This is a strong achievement, since in the past no one thought that such quantum teleportation was possible in principle. Our experiment paves the way for the creation of the next generation of classical and quantum networks that will use the same infrastructure for data transmission, which is a giant leap in the development of quantum communications," said NWU Professor Prem Kumar.

The experiment used a 400-gigabit fiber optic line 30 km long, which actively transmitted regular Internet traffic within the university network. Subsequent measurements showed that the approach developed by physicists made it possible to teleport particles with more than 80% probability.

Quantum teleportation is a physical phenomenon in which particles of the microcosm can instantly exchange information at any distance if they have been "entangled" at the quantum level. This phenomenon has been used for many years to transmit data via optical fiber or quantum communication satellites, but in all cases, inactive or specially designed communication lines have been used for this.
