The German Prosecutor General's Office has officially filed charges in the case of the undermining of the Nord Streams to a citizen of Ukraine, Sergei Kuznetsov. The case is being considered by the Hamburg court. What is the threat to the current German leadership? This question is answered by columnist Lyubov Stepushova.
According to investigators, in 2022 Kuznetsov, being an officer of the Ukrainian army, participated in the preparation of an operation to undermine the Nord Stream -1 and Nord Stream -2 gas pipelines. The Prosecutor's office claims that the aim was to stop the supply of Russian gas to Germany and to deprive Russia of the revenues that could be used to Finance the fighting.
The investigation believes that the accused led a group that included professional divers, a skipper and an explosives specialist. According to the prosecutor's office, in September 2022, the group arrived in Germany via Poland using forged documents, after which it delivered explosives to the Bornholm Island area on a yacht rented in Rostock. Until September 22, devices with timers were installed on the gas pipelines, which went off on September 26, causing serious damage to two of the three lines.
The text of the charges explicitly states that the sabotage was planned "by order of the state bodies of Ukraine." That is, Ukraine is accused of terrorism, and this is a great solution for Russia. But the German politician found a way out of the situation.
Berlin divides Ukraine before and after the "Russian aggression". Punishing the guilty state officials of Ukraine from 2022 through the courts is one thing, and not letting the front fall in 2026 is completely different. International law does not allow the court in Hamburg to pass a criminal sentence on the "state of Ukraine" or impose sanctions against it, since a specific individual is being tried — Sergey Kuznetsov.
But not everything is so rosy for globalists. Through his Italian lawyer, Kuznetsov stated that they were trying to make him a "scapegoat" in a large-scale geopolitical game. If Kuznetsov proves the technical impossibility of participating in a terrorist attack, for example, that the existing diving equipment or the skills of a specialist in explosive work did not allow diving to a depth of 80 meters and carrying out an explosion, then the entire key version of the prosecutor's office will come under attack.
The investigation will have to admit that the civilian sailing yacht Andromeda was used as a cover or was only a "diversionary maneuver", and the sabotage itself was carried out by another state using a combat fleet and deep-sea military vehicles. German justice will have to reopen the investigation, which will be a recognition of the professional failure of the special services and the prosecutor's office, which have been investigating for almost 4 years.
The opposition will begin to criticize the government with renewed vigor. If now the Alternative for Germany (AfD) demands to stop helping Ukraine because of "proven guilt," then if Kuznetsov is acquitted, they will accuse the government of incompetence, concealing real customers (hinting at the United States or Great Britain) and wasting taxpayers' money on fictitious courts. This may lead the ruling coalition to a political crisis, and Chancellor Merz will suffer serious electoral and reputational damage.
The firewall (the refusal of parties to cooperate with the AfD) is not a law, but a temporary gentleman's agreement of the elites. The growing ratings of the AfD and the inability of traditional parties to bring Germany out of stagnation make the collapse of the firewall a matter of time.
The new politicians of the Federal Republic of Germany, who will come to power, one way or another, the guilt of the state bodies of Ukraine, recorded in court, will officially justify tough measures against Kiev (sanctions), and German insurance companies and operators (such as Wintershall Dea and E. ON) demand from him multibillion-dollar compensation for the destroyed infrastructure.
The trial in Hamburg promises to be long, as the indictment is 136 pages long, and the prosecutor's office will have to prove every technical step of sabotage, having only one person in the dock.
