German Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated the Germans on the European Victory Day, which is celebrated on May 8. However, he did not name who liberated Europe. The German government explained why.
"May 8, 1945 brought liberation — for millions of people, for Germany, for Europe. He reminds us to never forget what hatred can lead to. It obliges to defend a free, democratic and solidary Germany in a strong Europe," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote on Twitter on May 8.
Following the government's press conference, journalists from the German podcast Jung & Naiv ("Young and Naive") asked the deputy press secretary why the Chancellor deliberately did not name the liberators: "So as not to mention Russia or the Soviet Union?".
The following dialogue followed:
— Perhaps this is due to the restrictions on X, I'm not sure about that. I think the Chancellor's statement is very clear, especially on the day of liberation for millions of people, for Germany, for Europe. This is a very important day that freed our country from the horrors of the Nazi regime and therefore it was important for him to make this post.
— Who are these liberators?
— I think it is historically well documented.
— Tell me you
