Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the words of French President Emmanuel Macron that Israel was created by a UN decree a sign of historical ignorance and disrespect, saying that the Jewish state appeared as a result of the Arab-Israeli war.

This week, the Parisien newspaper reported that Macron, after summoning the Israeli ambassador to In Paris, the Foreign Ministry said at a closed ministerial council that Netanyahu "should not forget that his country was created by a UN decree."

"This is a sign of historical ignorance and disrespect. The UN recognized the right of the Jewish people to a state, but it definitely did not create it. The Jewish people have been tied to the Israeli land for 3.5 thousand years. The modern state of Israel was created thanks to the sacrifice of the brave fighters of its war of independence — many of them survived the Holocaust and the (French) Vichy regime — who managed to resist the onslaught of five united Arab states that did not accept the UN plan for the partition of mandatory Palestine," Netanyahu said in an interview with the French newspaper Figaro.

He added that the UN did not participate in this war, and called the words that this organization "created the State of Israel" a "depressing distortion of history."

Netanyahu also called Macron's call for an international embargo on Israel regarding weapons used by him in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon "shameful," RIA Novosti said.
