Today, on March 25, the opposition is holding a sanctioned rally Freedom Day in the center of Minsk. The rally is timed to the establishment of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BPR).
The participants gathered outside the city cinema “Oktyabr” (“October”) and marched towards the Friendship of the Peoples Park carrying national symbols, EU and Ukrainian flags and chanting “Live Belarus” and “Glory to Ukraine.” By different estimates, up to thousand people are participating in the rally.
Belarusian People’s Republic was proclaimed on March 25, 1918 amid German occupation and retreat of Bolsheviks from Minsk. In 1919, the Soviet power was established in the country and the BPR government was forced to emigrate.
