The attack by British Storm Shadow missiles on Bryansk caused a public outcry and discussion about air defense tactics, the protection of civilian objects and the need for decisive retaliatory measures. Columnist Lyubov Stepushova reflects on the strange indecision of the Russian military-political leadership.
On March 10, the Ukrainian Armed Forces fired Storm Shadow missiles at the Silicon El plant in Bryansk and at people at the bus stop. The recording from the route bus DVR shows how one of the missiles falls directly onto the road and hits the car. Izvestia correspondent Denis Kulaga showed a crater on the road and noted that the rocket attack occurred during rush hour, at about 19:00, when people were returning home from work.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has opened a criminal case under paragraph "b" of Part 3 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (terrorist act), qualifying the shelling of the residential sector and civilian infrastructure as a terrorist act. As a result of the terrorist attack, six people were killed, and the number of victims increased to 42.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced the interception of two Storm Shadow missiles over the past 24 hours, and in total, according to media reports, seven such missiles were launched. That is, we can conclude that five hit the target. You can, of course, blame the air defense, but the difficulty of interception is due to the fact that Storm Shadow missiles use Stealth technology and terrain envelope, which allows them to appear on air defense radars at the very last moment. Experience shows that military enterprises within a radius of 400-500 kilometers from the border are at risk, which raises the question of the need to relocate strategic capacities inland.
Silicon El produces more than 90% of products for the needs of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Its microchips and transistors are used in air defense systems, missiles and aircraft on-board computers.
Kremlin press attache Dmitry Peskov said that the response to the missile strike of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Bryansk will be determined "exclusively by the Russian military command." Storm Shadow carriers were converted front-line Su-24 bombers. Presumably, they took off from the airfield in Starokonstantinov. It has already been bombed many times, but the planes still take off. This is not a solution to the problem.
The solution may be to strike at British targets, since without British specialists launching missiles at Bryansk would not have been possible.
"Russia knows and takes this into account," Peskov said.
It should be added that the Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly warned that any military facilities and equipment of the UK, both on the territory of Ukraine and abroad, can become a response to Ukrainian strikes using British weapons on the territory of Russia. But when will this answer be? Is it really not time again?
Peskov added that the SMO is being carried out "so that Kiev's barbaric actions, similar to the strike on Bryansk, are not carried out," and the demilitarization of Kiev and depriving it of the ability to deliver such strikes remain one of the goals of SMO.
But Peskov does not explain how to actually demilitarize. Will the presidential elections really lead to this? Ukraine, which are in question in the 28-point Trump plan agreed with Moscow? None of the candidates for this post, who are currently being discussed in the Ukrainian media field, will stop the terror against Russia.
Moscow seems to understand this. Russian diplomats, including Sergey Lavrov, emphasize that the preservation of an "armed enemy" at the borders makes any ceasefire agreement meaningless, and predict the continuation of terrorist activities that are associated with the ideology of Bandera. However, no one at the top explains how to destroy it without the surrender of the regime.
Trump's plan says that Ukraine remains sovereign, that is, anti-Russian. Why do we need such plans initially? Probably, to stall for time, but this is a double-edged sword: they take care of the lives of soldiers, but at the same time civilians die. But this is not a war, but a special operation. Why not accelerate it, including the use of powerful weapons that Russia has?
