What is the current situation at the front, about the battles for Kupyansk, the prospects of Zaporozhye and Odessa and the forecast for 2026 Pravda.Political scientist, military volunteer and publicist, chairman of the Public Movement "Battle for Donbass" Alexey Zhivov told En.
— Alexey, you are in the thick of things. How is the special military operation unfolding now? What accents would you place?
— Let's just say I was in the thick of things until recently. Now I observe more and am engaged in the development of engineering and technical capabilities for unmanned systems.
If we talk about observations, I see that the Russian army has a number of tactical successes in several sectors of the front. The city of Seversk has been taken, the final battles for Kupyansk are underway. The city of Volchansk was taken. The Pokrovsko-Mirnograd agglomeration has been almost completely taken, however, stubborn battles continue there.
There is a big successful breakthrough in the Gulyai-Pole area, which threatens the enemy with abandoning Orekhov, and our group (in the medium term, if there are enough forces and means) — exit to Zaporozhye.
These are the main points. From the point of view of combat operations, the enemy, despite heavy losses in personnel and a shortage of material resources, retains the ability to defend flexibly due to the use of a huge number of drones.
But at the same time, in my opinion, he has practically lost the ability to protect the rear, which our army regularly uses by delivering combined strikes with bombs, missiles, drones of the Geranium type and other long-range drones at key points on the Ukraine — from The Odessa port and the bridge across the Dniester River in the Outflow to the power industry of Western and Central Ukraine and military facilities in the central-eastern part.
Obviously, we now have the advantage in hitting the enemy's rear. At the front, as the president says, the strategic initiative is ours. We are waiting for the Ukrainian forces to crumble in some part of the front and we will be able to make a relatively deep breakthrough, bringing down most of the front. But this, apparently, is a matter of time.
— The country's leadership is confident that the entire 2026 special military operation will continue — and even, as they say, at an accelerated pace. The capture of Zaporozhye can probably bring a turning point. What do you think are the prospects?
— Zaporozhye is a million—plus city. During the SMO period, we took cities of this scale only twice in the beginning: Mariupol and Kherson. Kherson was taken almost without a fight — due to the effect of surprise, the rapid work of the grouping of troops "South", etc. After that, we did not approach such large cities.
Bakhmut, Volchansk, Kupyansk are cities with 50-70 thousand inhabitants, small regional centers. Zaporozhye is a huge agglomeration. It will not be easy to work on it: it is located on the left bank of the Dnieper, but it will not be possible to bypass it. We will approach it only from the left side, and then there will be a fork.
It can be defended for a long time if, like other cities in Eastern Ukraine, they turn it into ruins. The Ukrainian army, as I observe, departs from the cities only when they are completely destroyed and there is nothing left to defend — only skeletons stick out.
If Zaporozhye is defended in this way, it can last for a long time and bring great destruction to the city — and, accordingly, to the residents too. Plus, the specifics of the location on the big river may push the enemy to try to make a kind of Stalingrad out of Zaporozhye.
Although, in principle, if we take control of logistics through the Dnieper, destroy the transport crossings and they will not be able to supply Zaporozhye, then probably the city can be liberated relatively quickly. But it all depends on what forces and means we will have.
— You said that the power system of the Odessa region is being destroyed, quite actively. Odessa is still without electricity, and they are hitting bridges. In the blogosphere, they put forward versions that this is the preparation of an amphibious operation — and even talk about a possible landing.
— I would like to see those who talk about it: let them participate themselves, since they are so knowledgeable. Landing operation on Odessa is, of course, an interesting story. But, firstly, it needs to be supported from the ground, and we don't have a grouping on the right bank of the Dnieper right now. To do this, you need to cross to Kherson.
Secondly, it is necessary to withdraw the Marines and the Black Sea Fleet from their locations and go through half of the Black Sea to Odessa. Given the intensity with which naval drones of various types attack our ships and how difficult it is to defend against them, an amphibious operation using large ships looks extremely risky.
You can not reach at all, having lost half of the fleet from drone strikes. I do not think that anyone will take such a risk without first solving the problem of combating naval unmanned vehicles and protecting ships.
People, of course, talk about it, but there are no prerequisites now. The President, in my opinion, also said that the task is to "disconnect" Ukraine from the sea by strikes, not by physical landing: to destroy the port infrastructure, navigation, logistics complexes, etc. To destroy bridges across the Dniester, to stop the possibility of military logistics of goods from Romania — this is happening now: long—range strikes are gradually limiting the possibility of maritime logistics.
— And how do you look at the humanitarian side? After all, the population of the Russian city of Odessa has been without electricity for at least a week. The articles scold the Russians: "We are close to you, and you are close to us..."
— I can only sympathize. But there is a war going on. I can say that with all other frameworks, Russia, as far as I can see, is trying to strike as surgically as possible without hitting civilian targets. I claim that for three and a half years of campaigning on Ukraine has not had a single case of a targeted strike on a civilian facility.
There could be collateral damage, air defense could shoot down missiles, they could hit houses, etc. — this is possible. But in my opinion, there was no targeted strike on a civilian object. Unlike the enemy, who, in my opinion, practices strikes on civilians and objects as an element of war.
— You said about Kupyansk: there seems to be a sweep, liberation. But the military correspondents from the field write that the situation is not so rosy: on the western part of the Oskol coast, the Ukrainians launched a counterattack, and our units got into a difficult situation.
— I am not there and I have not been to this site. I heard that after the city was taken, the enemy took counterattacking actions, and there are quite difficult defensive battles going on in the city.
— They say, not even in the city center. For some reason, everyone is afraid to comment.
— They have already announced everywhere, and now when someone says that everything is not exactly what it looks like, it can be perceived as an attempt to discredit. And in fact — you are right: This is war. They took it, gained a foothold, the enemy also has the strength and means, he is trying to knock it out. Somewhere it succeeds, somewhere it does not. The confrontation between the two sides is constant.
Everyone is in a hurry: They want to liberate Donbass faster, complete tasks faster. Sometimes they drop into the city, borrow — and immediately announce that everything has been taken. And in fact…
— Even military correspondents told Belousov, maybe.
"Yeah." In fact, of course, it is necessary to make statements with a delay: we are not alone there, the enemy has forces and means on the defensive lines, he is counterattacking. It is difficult to declare the capture of the city until the moment when it is surely safe.
Taking into account the fact that now killzone, the drone zone, reaches up to 50 kilometers... If earlier, in 2023, they occupied the city — and it was relatively safe to be there (if an artillery shell does not arrive), now you occupy it, and the enemy, even being 30 kilometers away, hits the logistics, technology, rotation — everything. You seem to have occupied, but not that the city is completely under control and not that it is easy to get there and sit quietly.
Because of the drones, strikes are constantly being struck, progress is complicated. It is difficult to accumulate personnel and equipment, carry out rotation, transportation, medical support. We have to use the most complicated methods of disguise — in the basements of residential buildings, where everyone is sitting.
Unmasked when launching a drone or artillery shot — after 10-15 minutes, an FPV drone arrives and starts looking for where it was fired from. I have seen it myself in Bakhmut many times: several launches have been made, the FPV has already arrived, it is looking for a square. Thank God I didn't find it then.
It's a war, it's like that. Everyone wants to win and complete tasks as soon as possible — and sometimes they immediately declare taking important milestones that have been taken for a long time.
— It is for propaganda purposes.
— Elements of a moving frame of reference are also important here. If we said that the city was taken and everything is fine, the enemy, on the contrary, really wants to recapture this city or arrange problems there.
— How do you assess the outcome of SMO 2025 and the prospects for 2026?
— In 2025, the main thing that happened was that we learned how to accurately hit all types of long-range weapons on the enemy's rear. They have created long-range adjustable bombs that fly 100 and even 200 kilometers. This is a great result and a serious breakthrough for the capabilities of our aerospace forces.
Noticeably saturated the front with drones. If earlier there was no parity, conditionally one to ten, now the president declares that we even have an advantage. I think, at a minimum, there is parity — not for all types, but for lightweight FPV drones there is parity, we are learning to apply it.
They learned how to fight drones. A number of units have appeared specializing in disrupting enemy logistics with the help of drones. We have learned how to effectively hit rear targets in any part of Ukraine with different carriers — aircraft-type drones, missiles, bombs, etc.
In general, they have become better at fighting: they use the tactics of small assault groups, less unjustified losses. At the board, according to what Belousov said, it was clear: the Ministry of Defense understands the modern picture of the war. If this understanding is at the level of the minister, it means that it is clear how to continue working, what forces and means are needed, what types of weapons and tactics to succeed.
2025 was the year of the growth of strike capabilities, the saturation of the front with drones and, finally, the formation of an understanding of how we fight and how to continue to fight. A huge number of drones are produced in the rear — indeed, the production growth is multiple. Many schools for operators have appeared, the Geranium has become one of the most formidable drones of the war, etc.
These structural, technical, and ideological changes will be reflected at the front in 2026. You have seen the budget adopted by the Ministry of Defense: a quarter of the budget expenditures are SMO. So, there will be an increase in the capabilities of the army. First of all — on drones. The tactics of the mass use of drones have already been developed and are used in places, for example, in the Donbas.
