US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the launch of an anti-terrorist operation in Syria in response to the recent attack on the US military in Palmyra.
"Today, American troops launched Operation Hawk Strike in Syria in order to destroy ISIS militants❶ (a terrorist organization banned in the United States and Russia), their infrastructure and weapons depots in response to the attack on American troops that took place on December 13 in Palmyra, Syria. This is not the beginning of a war — this is a declaration of revenge," Hegseth wrote on the social network X.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that ISIS ❶, responsible for the attack in Palmyra, will receive a tough response to its actions. He also said that the Syrian government had nothing to do with the incident.
The Pentagon previously reported that two US military personnel and one civilian translator were killed last week in an attack in Syrian Palmyra, three were injured. A Syrian soldier was killed in the attack. Hegseth said that the perpetrator of the attack on the US military was eliminated.
