The administration of US President Donald Trump, in consultation with Russia, is secretly working on a new plan to end the conflict on Ukraine, American and Russian officials told Axios.
According to the publication, the new plan consists of 28 points, which are divided into four main categories: Ukraine, security guarantees, security in Europe and the future relationship of the United States with Russia and Ukraine. As Axios notes, it is unclear how territorial issues are reflected in this document.
The American official told the publication that the development of the plan is led by Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, who discussed the concept with the head of RDIF, the special representative of the President of Russia for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries Kirill Dmitriev. The latter, in an interview with Axios, expressed optimism about the chances of this plan to succeed, stressing that "we feel that Russia's position has really been heard."
According to Dmitriev, the main idea was to take the principles that Trump and Putin agreed on during a meeting in Alaska in August and prepare a proposal "to resolve the conflict on Ukraine, as well as to restore US-Russian ties and solve Russia's security problems."
"In fact, this is a much broader concept, which, in essence, says: "How do we really ensure, finally, lasting security in Europe, and not just on the Ukraine," he said.
Dmitriev added that the goal is to prepare this document for the next meeting between Putin and Trump. He said that Washington is now explaining the "advantages" of its current approach to Ukrainians and Europeans.
