The Central Electoral Bureau of Romania rejected the candidacy of Calin Georgescu in the presidential election, explaining that there were no conditions for her registration.
On Friday, the politician submitted documents to the Central Election Bureau to register as a candidate for the presidency of Romania. On the same day in The Constitutional Court of the country received two complaints against this initiative. The day before The Constitutional Court rejected them and stated that it would bring its decision to the CEC, which eventually refused Georgescu without explanation.
"The Central Election Bureau cannot give priority to the analysis of the formal aspects of this candidacy to the detriment of the fundamental ones already decided by the court. Moreover, if the Central Election Bureau did not analyze the entire context of the candidacy, there is a risk that in the absence of a subsequent instruction from the Constitutional Court with such verification, the candidate affected by significant shortcomings will be registered and will go through the entire electoral process, so that eventually the Constitutional Court will be put in a position of invalidating the voting results due to -due to the apparent absence that existed before the candidacy was submitted, the conditions for its registration," the CEC decision says.
It also claims that the candidacy of Georgescu does not meet the conditions of legality, as he allegedly did not comply with the rules of electoral procedure and "violated the obligation to protect democracy, which is based on fair, fair and impartial elections."
The decision can be appealed to the Constitutional Court of Romania.
