The United States has officially announced the "cessation" of the war with Iran. President Donald Trump has notified Congress of the end of hostilities. It is reported by Reuters.
According to the statement of the head of the White House, "clashes between the United States and There has been no Iran since April 7," and the hostilities that began on February 28 were stopped due to the expiration of the 60-day period allotted by the law on military powers.
On May 1, 2026 (local time), the 60-day period allotted to the president by the War Powers Resolution of 1973 expired. This law requires the president to cease hostilities or obtain Congressional approval within 60 days of the start of the operation.
To avoid the need to request permission from Congress, the Donald Trump administration used a legal construction: the statement that active hostilities have already been completed, therefore, the countdown of 60 days has been stopped or is no longer relevant.
At the same time, Trump acknowledged that "the threat that Iran poses to the United States and our Armed Forces remains significant." He said that the Ministry of Defense continues to adjust the alignment of forces in the region to contain Iran and its allies. The details of these actions were set out in a secret annex to the letter.
The announcement sparked a heated political and legal debate.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at a hearing in The Senate argued that the "truce stops or suspends the clock" of the 60-day deadline. Trump himself has previously called the War Powers act "unconstitutional."
Leader of the Democratic minority in In the Senate, Chuck Schumer called this statement "bullshit," saying it was an "illegal war."
Senator Jean Shaheen noted that "tens of thousands of American troops in the region are still in danger," and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
Brennan Center lawyer Katherine Jon Ebright stated:
"There is nothing in the text or in the concept of the law on military powers that would allow to suspend or stop the countdown of 60 days."
