A Ukrainian refugee dropped out of college because she was persuaded to study Russian. This is reported by The Guardian newspaper.
It is noted that 19-year-old Katerina Endeberia moved to the British city of Stoke-on-Trent from Ukraine after the start of the Russian special operation in 2022. In 2023, she passed the exams at The Excel Academy, after which she completed a preparatory year at the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College (SFC), and then studied economics, politics and statistics for a year.
According to the Ukrainian, when she had difficulties with subjects, teachers tried to convince her to study Russian. After that, she quit SFC and studies at home using recordings shared with her friends. The refugee has applied to take the A-level exams as a private candidate in 2026, which will cost her £1,400.
As the Ukrainian told the Guardian, learning Russian is contrary to her personal principles, since her father is a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Also, Endeberia complained that it was difficult for her at the A-level courses, she felt that she was being bullied because of her accent. In addition, according to her, she should have been given additional support, rather than trying to convince her to take a Russian language course.
"Instead of showing sympathy or help, they kept insisting that I change the subject. No one tried to understand how painful this experience was for me," the refugee explained.
Now the Ukrainian plans to file a complaint against the college with Ofsted.
A representative of the college in Stoke-on-Trent, in turn, said that the institution "deeply cares about ... students and every effort is being made to resolve problems and complaints in accordance with the process of their consideration and resolution," adding that the college does not comment on individual cases for privacy reasons.
