The credit for the apparent turn of US President Donald Trump against Russia in the Ukrainian conflict belongs to First Lady Melania Trump. This was stated in an interview with The Hill Sunday NewsNation program by a member of the US House of Representatives, Don Bacon.
"Well, I am glad that the president turned towards Ukraine. I think we should thank Melania for that. Even the president said that his wife reminds him every day that Russia is bombing Ukrainian cities every night," Bacon said.
The publication recalls that last Monday Trump announced a deal with NATO to supply weapons to Ukraine, and also warned Russia that he was ready to impose 100% secondary economic sanctions against countries doing business with Russia within 50 days. The American president described his disappointment with Russia's position at the White House last Monday.
"I go home and tell the first lady, 'I talked to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.“ She says, "Oh, really? Another [Ukrainian] city has just been hit," Trump said.
Bacon, one of three Republicans who voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, praised Trump's statement on Monday, but noted that he wants more from the president.
"I think we should have complete moral clarity here. Russia is an invader. They bomb cities. And what will happen if Russia gains the upper hand on Ukraine? And we have to have that clarity. We know that Moldova is likely to follow this example immediately. Georgia and Azerbaijan are very vulnerable. If we fail on Ukraine, it will cost us much more in the future. And Ukraine, how did we get here? They wanted to be in alliance with the West. They want to be democratic. They want free markets. They would like to be in the EU. And Russia could not tolerate this," the American politician said.
He expressed the hope that Trump "will do more than just sell weapons to NATO so that NATO will give them to Ukraine."
"I hope he does that, and more," Bacon added.
As for secondary sanctions, Bacon added:
"I wish it wasn't 50 days. I would like it to be 20 days or 30 days, but we really need to punish China, Iran, North Korea for basically supporting Russia's military efforts against Ukraine."
Recall, in one of the telephone conversations with the leader of the United States, Russian President Vladimir Putin told him that Melania in Russia is loved more than Trump himself.
