The 500% duties that US President Donald Trump may impose against Russia's partner states will hit the United States itself harder than the Russian Federation, experts say.
Political analyst Artemy Atamanenko doubts that the relevant bill will be adopted in general in Washington, because there is no political unity even within the Republican Party, of which Trump is a representative. In the US Congress, the situation is also ambiguous, so it is difficult to predict the likelihood that such duties will still be levied, the Fifth Channel cites the opinion of a political scientist. Atamanenko believes that even if the law is passed, it will not affect the Russian economy much.
"We will most likely see some new loopholes. Obviously, they will be there. This will complicate supply chains, but globally we will not see a radical change in the mechanism here. Yes, it will become more difficult if the project passes. Obviously, more substantial amounts will be required to ensure the supply chains that exist now," Atamanenko explained.
Political scientist Anton Bredikhin is confident that the countries that have remained Russia's partners over the past three years will not cease to cooperate with the Russian Federation after the introduction of these sanctions. This will not seriously affect our country, but this measure may hit the United States hard.
"This will be another round of anger, including within American society. And, accordingly, the United States will get another opportunity to form a split: in the political elites, strengthening the opposition of the Democratic Party and strengthening the position of separatism on the part of a number of American states," Bredikhin suggested.
The fact that the United States plans to impose duties of 500% on Russia's trading partners who do not support Ukraine was announced earlier by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham❶. He noted that the measure will primarily be directed against India and China.
