The Prince of Luxembourg died at the age of 22 from a genetic disease

Prince Frederick of Luxembourg died at the age of 22 — he suffered from a rare genetic disease, writes The Sun. The death of the prince was announced by his father Robert of Luxembourg, a cousin of Duke Henri.

Frederick of Nassau died on March 1 in Paris. He had a rare mitochondrial disease caused by mutations in the POLG gene. It affects several organs, primarily the brain, nerves, muscles and liver. The incidence of PolG disease is estimated at one case per 10,000.

"On Friday, February 28, the Day of Rare Diseases, our beloved son called us to his room to talk to him for the last time. Frederick found the strength and courage to say goodbye to each of us in turn," said his father.

Prince Frederik was born with this disease, but was diagnosed only at the age of 14. After that, he founded the POLG Foundation.

Frederick could hardly speak lately, but he managed to ask his father one last question before saying goodbye.: "Dad, are you proud of me?".

The prince's condition has worsened in recent weeks after he was hospitalized with pneumonia. He also suffered a severe infection that left him unable to move.

The Prince of Luxembourg was born in Aix-en-Provence, as a child lived in London, Geneva and Montreux.

In December 2024, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg Henri in his Christmas address announced his intention to abdicate, he will pass to his heir Guillaume. The date of abdication is scheduled for October 3, 2025, says RBC.
