Now former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has refused a deal with the United States to stop Iranian transfers for the Lebanese Hezbollah organization in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) with reference to former Syrian diplomat Bassam Barabandi.
According to the newspaper, Washington, through the UAE, offered to negotiate with Assad a few weeks before the offensive of the armed opposition. Nevertheless, Assad refused.
More fatal for Assad, according to WP, was his refusal to establish relations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who offered to normalize relations with Damascus in exchange for deterring Kurdish formations and returning at least some of the refugees to the territory of the Arab republic.
