The elections of the President of Moldova were recognized as having taken place, since the turnout exceeded the required third of voters. This was announced today, October 20, by the Central Election Commission, an EADaily correspondent reports. According to the CEC, as of 14.30, 33.07% of citizens used their right to vote.

In general, almost a million voters entered in the electoral lists voted, among them about 100 thousand of the Diaspora. At 30 polling stations open in the security zone, more than 6,600 citizens of the Republic of Moldova living in Transnistria. Accordingly, the minimum threshold for the turnout of citizens has been overcome, which makes it possible to recognize the elections as having taken place.

It should be noted that in the 2020 presidential elections this figure was reached later, after 16:00.

The CEC reminds that polling stations will be open until 21:00 local time.

"Reporting is carried out manually, by counting signatures in electoral lists and transmitting data by phone and e-mail. Therefore, there is a delay of about an hour in reporting data on the referendum," the CEC said.

The preliminary turnout is 16.14%. In order for the referendum to be recognized as having taken place, at least a third of voters must take part.

Recall, 11 candidates are applying for the post of head of state, and at the referendum citizens answer one question: "Do you support making changes to the A constitution for the purpose of Moldova's accession to the European Union?".

It is expected that the main struggle for the presidency will unfold in the second round, where Maya Sandu, re-nominated by the ruling Action and Solidarity party, and one of her main opponents: former Prosecutor General Alexander Stoyanoglo, who was supported by the socialists, the leader of Our Party Renato Usatii or the ex-head of Gagauzia Irina Vlah will come out. According to the current legislation, an exit poll is not conducted at these elections.

Regarding the constitutional referendum, the pro-European authorities, with the support of Western partners, carried out explanatory work on the advantages of joining the EU. In turn, the opposition urged citizens to boycott the vote or vote against.
