The UN General Assembly has recognized the transatlantic slave trade as "the most serious crime against humanity," calling for reparations to be paid to the affected countries. This is reported by the BBC.
In total, about 15 million Negroes were taken out of Africa as slaves for 400 years, a third of them died on the road from diseases and unbearable conditions.
The resolution, introduced by Ghana, calls on UN member states to apologize for the slave trade and pay reparations through a special fund. The document was adopted by 123 votes in favor with three against — the United States, Israel and Argentina. 52 countries abstained, including Britain and EU members.
As is known, the largest European colonial empires — Britain, France, Portugal and Spain. At the same time, Britain has rejected calls to pay reparations to the last, arguing that modern state institutions cannot be held responsible for historical crimes.
It is also worth noting that the majority of the countries of the British Commonwealth voted for the UN resolution on the slave trade.
