A drone entered Latvian airspace from Russia and exploded. This was announced today, March 25, by the National Armed Forces of the country (NBS).
It is reported that the Air Force recorded the entry of a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle into Latvian airspace from Russia. According to Egils Leshinskis, Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff of the National Armed Forces for Operational Issues, at 02.19, an unidentified aircraft approaching and crossing the Latvian border was detected on the radar. The drone exploded at 02.39 near the village of Dobrichina (Kraslavsky Krai), 13 km from the border. The drone exploded on its own, not after it was shot down.
Leszczynskis did not speculate about the power of the explosion, stressing that neither the manufacturer of the drone nor the country of origin has yet been established. Leschinskis noted that the night as a whole was restless for the air defense units — even before the mentioned incident, around midnight, it was recorded that another object also flew into Latvian airspace from Belarus, made a slight turn and flew towards Russia. According to him, both drones deviated from the course or electromagnetic warfare equipment was directed at them, as a result of which they changed their original trajectory and "flew where they shouldn't have." Leschinskis estimated that, in general, the Latvian Ministry of Defense is ready for incidents of this type, but "if hostilities occur in neighboring countries," 100% security cannot be guaranteed.
Later, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silinja said that "at first glance, it seems that the drone that fell in Latvia could have been Ukrainian, as in Lithuania".
"I can confirm that a similar incident occurred in Estonia," she said.
Silina confirmed that on the evening of March 24 she kept in touch with the Minister of Defense, who is currently in Kiev.
"In the face of frequent attacks on We should expect that this countermeasures from the Ukrainian side will be impressive. We are at the border and we feel it," the prime minister said, adding that the good news is that "our systems have detected this drone."
Recall that in the last few days Ukraine has been carrying out massive drone strikes on the northwestern regions of Russia. Earlier in Lithuania, a drone fell on the ice of Lake Lavisas without creating a threat to the safety of the population. On the night of March 25, a Ukrainian drone crashed into a power plant in Estonia.
