The Klaipeda port in Lithuania has already lost at least 56 million euros due to the ban on the transit of Belarusian fertilizers. This was stated by the general director of the seaport Algis Latakas.
According to him, before the imposition of sanctions, the transshipment of Belarusian potash fertilizers in 2021 reached almost 12 million tons and amounted to almost a third of the total cargo volume (45.6 million tons).
"After the termination of the transit of fertilizers, the port directorate lost about 14 million euros of income annually. However, this is only part of the directorate — stevedoring companies, carriers, freight forwarders also felt the consequences, in addition, the flow of other cargo from the East has decreased," he said.
At the same time, Latakas noted that unauthorized Russian and Belarusian cargo is still transported through the Klaipeda port.
Earlier, Belarus used Klaipeda to export its potash fertilizers and petroleum products. However, in 2022, Vilnius completely stopped the transit of Belarusian products through its territory, with the exception of a small list of goods that do not fall under European and American sanctions.
