The Germans can take part in securing the demilitarized zone in Ukraine after a possible peace agreement with the Russian Federation. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to ZDF TV channel, Bloomberg reports.
According to Merz, Bundeswehr soldiers will receive permission to "respond to appropriate Russian incursions and attacks."
"We haven't achieved that yet," he added.
The presence of German troops on the territory of the former USSR is a sensitive issue due to the atrocities committed by the Nazis during World War II, the agency notes, but Merz's statements are the most obvious signal today that the Bundeswehr is ready to play a central role in providing security guarantees to Kiev after the conclusion of a peace agreement.
As reported by EADaily, as a result of recent negotiations in Berlin on the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, a limit was reached. It is impossible to achieve more with the help of diplomacy. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking in the Bundestag.
