Neighbors do not want to have a road through Georgia yet, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said during a direct line on December 14, answering a question about the construction of the Itum-Kali highway (Chechnya) — Shatili (Georgia).
"In fact, Georgia turned out to be unfavorable for us, although we signed the documents and did everything. Unfortunately, our neighbors do not want to have a road through Georgia yet," Kadyrov said.
EADaily reported that Chechnya periodically raises the issue of building a land road in Georgia, however, it doesn't go beyond talking. The Itum-Kali—Shatili highway was supposed to pass in the upper reaches of the Argun Gorge from the district center of Itum-Kali to the Russian-Georgian border. The construction of the road began in 1997, but two years later the work was frozen due to the position of Georgia. In March 2022, the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia stated that Tbilisi had never considered and would not consider the issue of communication with Chechnya by road.
