India has told the American side that it is not interested in purchasing F-35 fighters, preferring joint development of military equipment, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
"India has informed the United States that it does not seek to purchase inconspicuous F-35 jet fighters ... the government (of Indian Prime Minister Narendra) Modi is more interested in a partnership aimed at joint development and production of military equipment inside the country," the agency reports, citing informed sources.
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a 25 percent duty on goods from India from August 1, citing high tariffs from New Delhi, trade barriers, as well as New Delhi's cooperation with Moscow in the energy and arms sectors.
American Vice President J.D. Vance said in April that the US would like India to buy more weapons from the country, including F-35 fighter jets.
