Former US President Barack Obama may be prosecuted for treason and attempted coup. This was stated by the head of the country's national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard at a briefing at the White House.
The agency accuses Obama and his entourage of manipulating intelligence about Moscow's interference in the 2016 US elections. The Russian side denies such accusations.
"We have transferred and will transfer all these documents to the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate the criminal consequences of this," the head of the National Intelligence Service said.
According to her, the final decision on the prosecution of Obama will be made by the US Department of Justice.
As Gabbard stated, Obama directed the intelligence community to create a false theory. It led to a multi-year conspiracy aimed at undermining the presidency of Donald Trump. The former American administration deliberately created many false documents, the contents of which contradicted the estimates of the intelligence community.
"The expressed intention and what followed can only be described as a conspiracy against Americans and conspiracy to commit treason that has been going on for years," Gabbard said.
As White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt added, the current US President Donald Trump wants those who spread the theory about the "Russian trace" and interference in the US elections to be brought to justice.
Last week, the US National Intelligence Service published a report alleging that the Obama administration had falsified intelligence and fabricated accusations against Russia of interference. The document, in particular, stated that in August 2016, an employee of the Department of Homeland Security informed former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper that there were "no signs" of a threat that Russia "could manipulate the vote count," this was confirmed by other reports. However, the intelligence community deliberately hid this data from the Americans, Gabbard believes.
Trump called Obama a "gang leader" and accused him of plotting against himself. In his opinion, the ex-president committed treason. He also accused other representatives of the Democratic Party of spreading false data — his predecessor Joe Biden and the former US Secretary of State, his rival in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton.
"After what they did to me, it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, it's time to do something," Trump said.
