In the central part of New York, a giant bronze sculpture of an ordinary black woman appeared in Times Square. Monument Grounded in the Stars (Grounded among the stars) by British artist Thomas J. Price has caused a lot of negative comments — on social networks, among blacks and whites, in the media, and continues to excite the public.
The 4-meter plus-size lady directed a frown into the distance. She is wearing dreadlocks, ordinary clothes, the artist chose a pose — hands on her hips. As the Artnet News portal notes, she portrays an "imperfect woman."
The artist himself believes that his work should "encourage empathy" and "contradict preconceived notions of identity." In addition, he explained that her pose — relaxed, with a shifted center of gravity refers to the famous "David" by Michelangelo (1475-1564) and was used, "because of the new ways in which Price conveys a sense of reverence for the everyday humanity of people," also the monument is contrasted with the sculptures of outstanding "white, located nearby - musician To George Cohen and Chaplain Francis Duffy."
The sculpture has caused a lot of controversy and negativity. First of all, subscribers of Times Square Arts on Instagram❶ drew attention to the "angry" expression of the woman's face.
"Garbage", "This is some kind of leftist nonsense, just to piss off white people", "Judging by the comments, black people don't like her either", "She is not the exact embodiment of black American women. We come in all shapes and sizes, and you see her in simple clothes, looking angry. You are British, and you don't know anything about black American women. You should be ashamed of yourself," users write.
Fox News host Jesse Watters in one of the programs asked the question: "Who is this woman?".
"What did she do to get the statue? And a good one! Nothing. This is not a real person. This is a statue of DEI (DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — diversity, equality and inclusiveness)," Waters concluded.
In the end, the creator of the sculpture himself joined the controversy. On his page on the social network, he published a slide show that summarizes the opposing opinions about his work.
The black lady will remain in the center of New York only until June 17 of this year. Her further fate is unknown.
