Mark Zuckerberg testifies in a case that could lead to the collapse of his company. But what is the essence of the complaint of the Federal Trade Commission against Meta❶? Will the billionaire be forced to sell WhatsApp and Instagram❶? Or maybe Donald Trump will save him? That's what the Western media write about this.
The battle between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Meta❶ has been going on since 2019. It was then that the FTC and a group of 40 prosecutors launched an official investigation against the company, led by Mark Zuckerberg. The charges include, among other things, the company's monopolistic practices in the social media sector. Currently, Meta❶ owns three main platforms — Facebook❶, Instagram❶ and WhatsApp. The number of active users in the case of the first service is more than 3 billion, and in the case of the other two — more than 2 billion.
In 2020, the FTC case against Meta❶ was brought to federal court in Washington. The litigation continued for the next few years. The company's lawyers tried to get the case dismissed and achieved partial success. In 2021, Judge James Boasberg dismissed the first FTC lawsuit, finding that the monopoly charges were too general and poorly documented.
But the Federal Trade Commission has not given up. Under the leadership of Lina Khan, known for her tough approach to large technology companies, the Commission filed a new lawsuit, this time with stronger evidence. In 2022, the judge allowed the trial to continue, considering that the FTC had provided sufficient grounds to continue the case.
Currently, the main phase of the process is underway, which includes, among other things, the interrogation of witnesses, including Mark Zuckerberg himself. This week, the Facebook founder❶ spent almost 9 hours rejecting accusations of monopolistic actions of his company. But this is just the beginning of the auditions.
Now, according to many industry experts and political scientists, Zuckerberg, working in the "freest" market in the world, can only be helped by the will and loyalty of US President Donald Trump.
