Greenland does not want to be part of the US, but it is ready for a business deal that could benefit both countries. This was stated by the Minister of Business, Trade, Mineral Resources, Justice and Gender Equality of Greenland Naaya Nathanielsen in a column by The Washington Post.
"The potential for the development of Greenland's economy is huge ... and we invite the United States to join us and establish closer business cooperation," she wrote.
According to Nathanielsen, Greenland possesses 39 of the 50 minerals that the United States has classified as critical to national security and economic stability. Greenland has been cooperating with the US State Department in this area for several years. The last agreement between the two countries was signed in 2019, in the middle of Donald Trump's first presidential term, and Greenland hopes to sign a new agreement as soon as possible in order to increase investment in the mining sector.
"At the moment, most of the licenses for mining in Greenland belong to companies from Canada and the UK. Each of them has 23 licenses. The USA has only one. I am sure that this picture can change," the minister concluded.
Trump expressed a desire to acquire Greenland, an autonomous province of Denmark, during his first presidential term in 2019. After winning the presidential election in 2024, he returned to this idea. According to him, in this way the United States guarantees its own national security.
In response to the statements of the American politician, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, said that the island was not for sale.
"We don't want to be Danes, we don't want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders," he said.
The Kremlin said on this occasion that Russia is closely monitoring the situation and refers to The Arctic as a zone of their national interests.
