In Romania, the results of the first round of presidential elections were annulled. The whole electoral process will be restarted. This decision was made today, December 6, by the Constitutional Court after five hours of discussions. Now the government must set a new date and approve the calendar plan.
In the morning, the judges urgently gathered for consultations due to new requests to cancel the elections. They came after President Klaus Iohannis declassified intelligence reports on the election campaign of independent candidate Calin Georgescu, who criticized the policies of the EU and NATO.
Bucharest, seeing in the suveranist a threat to the European course of the country and its participation in the military bloc, did everything possible to exclude him from the election campaign, in which he could defeat the leader of the pro-European liberal party "Union of Salvation of Romania" Elena Lasconi.
Romanian intelligence agencies quickly stated that Calin Georgescu conducted an aggressive election campaign on TikTok, which was funded by Moscow-affiliated individuals. Yesterday, the Romanian Prosecutor General's Office launched an investigation against him on "signs of voter bribery, including through online campaigns, as well as money laundering." In turn, the Bucharest Foreign Ministry, as always without proof, accused Russia of "attempting to interfere" in the presidential elections.
As EADaily reported, Romania could elect the first president independent of Brussels for the first time, which would be a decisive choice for the future of this state in the EU and NATO. Georgescu's political position and popularity also aroused the concerns of the Washington Regional Committee.
"The progress that Romania has made with difficulty in its consolidation in the transatlantic community cannot be questioned by foreign players who are trying to divert Romania's foreign policy from its Western alliances," warned US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
