The Military Tribunal of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Central Africa) sentenced to death three US citizens and several Europeans for an attempted coup.
According to Reuters, an attempt to forcibly overthrow the government occurred in May of this year. Then armed men, including Americans, seized the president's office in Kinshasa.
The court accused the participants of the coup attempt of terrorism, criminal conspiracy and other crimes. A total of 37 people were sentenced to death, including citizens of Great Britain, Canada and Belgium.
In total, about 50 people appeared before the court. The verdict was read out to the defendants on the territory of the Ndolo military prison in the capital Kinshasa.
As reported by EADaily, the coup was prevented in Congo May 19. The conspirators tried to enter the palace of President Felix Chisekedi, but were neutralized by special forces. Later it became known that their leader Christian Malanga was killed by security forces.
The leaders of the rebel group and their accomplices had also previously been sentenced to death, most in absentia.
