In the Armenian city of Gyumri, the golden letters of the hero cities were torn off from the "Mother Armenia" memorial complex. This was announced by the city administration.
The letters were found in garbage cans on the territory of the memorial by employees of municipal services of the city. The letters were torn out with such force that chips and potholes were left on the slabs.
"This is pure vandalism, lack of respect for our ancestors, for the people who fought in these cities, received orders, became heroes and brought up generations. Moreover, the five—pointed stars were not touched, and the names of the cities were torn off," said Arthur Gevorgyan, director of the Gyumri National Park-Museum of Sculpture.
He admitted that this may be an attempt to drive another wedge into the Armenian-Russian relations. Now the specialists of the mayor's office are trying to restore the plates dedicated to the winning cities.
