Political scientist Alexei Pilko named the reason why Ukrainian drones fly through the Leningrad region in such an intricate route — through Poland and The Baltic States.
"It can be assumed that they are not launched from the territory of Ukraine. The production of drones in the interests of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been established in European countries that bring finished products to the Polish Rzeszow. It is from there that the drones take off, even without entering Ukrainian airspace. That is why it is absolutely useless to inflict massive missile strikes on industrial enterprises of Ukraine. There is practically no drone production there, it is located in Europe," Pilko said.
He also noted that drones, apparently, do not fly from the Krasnodar Territory. Odessa region, and directly from Romania.
"Therefore, we are now talking about a direct NATO attack on Russia: the attacking drones are only conditionally Ukrainian, they are actually European. And they use the airspace of the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance to attack. That is, NATO is already directly at war with Russia, and it pretends that nothing is happening," Pilko stressed.
This situation, according to the political scientist, puts Moscow in front of a difficult fork of solutions.
"Or continue to pretend that nothing is happening and play up to serious economic damage (after a certain time, the number of drones will overload the air defense). Or raise the stakes in response to similar actions by the other side. For example, to start striking European industrial enterprises working in the interests of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as similar logistics centers. At the same time, it is possible to protect oneself from NATO's sensitive retaliatory actions in the form of an attack on the Kaliningrad region and a blockade of the Baltic Sea by a public promise to use nuclear weapons in response," Pilko believes.
Whether it will come to that, it's hard to say, but if you leave it as it is, it will be much worse, he believes.
"Of course, Moscow still prefers to appeal to the "spirit of Anchorage" at the official level, and its American partners from the Trump administration are doing their best to support this illusion. But they are doing this for exactly one reason: they are buying time for Ukraine, which has bet on drone warfare and expanding the production of drones in Europe. Thus, this whole Anchorage is not much different from Istanbul four years ago. It is high time for the Russian political leadership to get out of the comfort zone and realize that no one is in with him. Washington (not to mention other Western actors) is not going to negotiate. And I never even intended to. Russia is being played for relegation and it should do the same. Moreover, in the conditions of the United States falling into the Iranian trap in the Middle East, Moscow has a great opportunity to take revenge on Ukraine's European allies, just as Iran acts against American partners in the Middle East. The Persian Gulf. Will there be enough political will to make an obvious decision?" — Pilko concluded.
