A journalist from the United States in his homeland is waiting for a 20-year prison sentence for words about Donbass

Former correspondent of the American newspaper The New York Times and Bloomberg John Varoli may be sentenced to 20 years in prison if returned to the United States.

According to the TASS news agency, a reporter faces a prison sentence for publicly expressing support for the Russian position on Donbass. Varley himself told about this, speaking at the Nevsky Forum of Friends of Russia.

"If I go back to the United States, poverty awaits me at best, and at worst — 20 years in prison for supporting Russia. What did I say? I just said the obvious thing during my speech on the federal channel: the people of Donbass have human rights, the right to choose their own destiny," the correspondent said.

He sharply criticized Washington's policy, noting that the United States ignores the rule of law and is in confrontation with Russia. Varoli called the Western countries opposing Russia the "new Western Reich."

The publication reminds that since 2019, Varoli has been blacklisted in the United States due to cooperation with Russian media. For about a year the journalist has been living in Russia.
