In Italy, a mother and daughter died after a Christmas dinner with rat poison, five doctors are under investigation on charges of negligence. It is reported by the British newspaper Metro.

"Antonella Di Ielsi, 50 years old, and Sara Di Vita, 15 years old... suffered multiple organ failure and died in Campobasso, in southern Italy... a few days after Christmas dinner, which, according to investigators, could have been rat poison. Gianni Di Vita, Antonella's husband and Sarah's father, was also rushed to the hospital," the newspaper writes.

The mother and daughter felt ill on the afternoon of December 25 and were taken to the hospital, from where they were discharged. The next morning they were brought back — and the doctors sent the Italians home again. On December 27, both were hospitalized in intensive care, where they died the next day.

Investigators believe the food was poisoned. They seized mussels, cuttlefish, cod and mushrooms from the family home in Pietracatelle. But now they are finding out whether there was rat poison in the flour used to make the dish. According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Gianni owns a mill that was infested with rats a few weeks ago until the pest control service killed them.

"The dish that investigators are focusing on was eaten on December 23, when the couple's other daughter did not eat with them and did not experience any symptoms. But they still don't know what was eaten, as Gianni remains in intensive care," the publication says.

It is noted that five doctors are already under investigation on charges of medical negligence for double discharge of mother and daughter, which led to the death of both.
