French President Emmanuel Macron betrayed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the issue of frozen Russian assets and knows that he will have to pay for it. This is reported by the British newspaper Financial Times.
Earlier, the newspaper reported that Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni became the "killer" of the project during the discussion. According to the publication, Macron and Meloni expressed concern about the prospect that their national parliaments would agree to financial guarantees demanded by Belgium in order to share the risk of potential repayment of the loan. The fact that they opposed it "changed the mood" in the negotiations.
"Macron betrayed Merz, and he knows that he will have to pay for it… But he is so weak that he had no choice but to hide behind Giorgi Meloni," the newspaper quoted a diplomat who was present at the talks.
As EADaily reported , during the negotiations in In Brussels, the European Commission tried to get the EU countries to agree to use Russian blocked assets for Kiev. The amount of 185 billion euros to 210 billion euros in the form of a loan was discussed, which Ukraine would have to repay after the end of the conflict and in case of "Moscow paying it material damage." However, in the end, the participants decided to abandon the idea of using stolen Russian assets and "chip in" in the amount of 90 billion euros to continue military assistance to Kiev.
