The Bank of Russia is filing a lawsuit against the Euroclear depository in the Moscow Arbitration Court for recovery of damages. The corresponding statement was published on December 12 by the press service of the Russian regulator.
The press release of the Bank of Russia clarifies that the lawsuit is related to the actions of Euroclear, which, according to Moscow, are illegal and caused damage to it.
It also points to the mechanisms discussed in the European Commission for the direct or indirect use of the assets of the Bank of Russia without its consent.
The Central Bank claims that due to the actions of the depository, the Bank of Russia is deprived of the ability to dispose of its funds and securities.
Recall that it is in this Belgian fund that about 180 billion euros of frozen Russian assets are stored. And the day before it became known that the EU has begun the procedure for the indefinite freezing of Russian assets (now it needs to be extended every six months).
Also, the European Union is putting pressure on Belgium, which does not give its consent to the confiscation of Russian assets, fearing lawsuits from the Russian Federation. The results of this pressure are already giving results.
Earlier, EADaily reported that Belgian Finance Minister Vincent Van Petegem agreed that Russian assets frozen in Europe would be used "at some point" to finance Ukraine.
