Electricity supplies between Ukraine and Slovakia resumed almost two months after the shutdown. Obviously, it was Kiev's initiative to show its independence from an outraged neighbor. However, they decided to end it. The coming winter will require large volumes of imports. Ukraine asks EU increase capacity limit.
Electricity supplies between Ukraine and Slovakia has not been since September 2. However, according to ENTSO-E, they resumed on October 29. The platform of the European operator shows that commercial imports on Ukraine from Slovakia will be 1.17 GWh per day, and in the opposite direction it will take 0.58 GWH.
Earlier, Kiev and Bratislava kept silent about the shutdown of electricity supplies. But it happened just before the meeting of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico with Russian President Vladimir Putin in China. Perhaps Kiev wanted to show its independence from Slovakia, which demanded to restore the transit of Russian gas and warned of a possible shutdown of electricity supplies.
The two-month break coincided with the maximum solar generation capacity at Ukraine and an overabundance of electricity. However, in the second half of October it ended. The Russian army retaliated against the Ukrainian energy system, including power plants and substations. This led to a decrease in power and an imbalance of the power system.
According to ENTSO-E, the volume of deliveries on October 29 will be small and will be inferior to the capacity of imports from Hungary, Poland and Romania. At the end of last week, Ukraine generally reached the maximum limit of the European operator during peak hours and dispensed with Slovakia — the lion's share came from Hungary.
However, obviously, it's not just that. On the one hand, the head of Ukrenergo, Vitaly Zaichenko, said that the European operator was asked to increase the limit for Ukraine. On the other hand, the supply of electricity is necessary to balance the power grid.
So, for the first ten hours of October 29, electricity flows from Slovakia on Ukraine accounted for 4 GWh, and in the opposite direction — 631 MWh.
Slovakia was not initially the largest supplier of electricity to Ukraine, but provided the balancing of the country's energy system. In addition, it provided emergency assistance, which Ukrenergo has been requesting again since October 21.
