The Administrative Court in Warsaw has suspended the construction of a container terminal in Swinoujscie after a complaint from a German environmental organization. Investments worth more than 2 billion euros have been temporarily suspended, and a final decision is expected on August 4.
The court's decision was made after a complaint by the German environmental organization Habitat Western Pomerania, supported by Polish activists. Without an effective decision on environmental protection, the Sea Ports Authority of Szczecin and Svinoujscie will not be able to proceed with the implementation of one of its key investments.
As Radio Z clarifies, the court's decision is temporary and will be valid until the end of the trial. The final court decision is expected on August 4 this year. Blocking the decision of the environmental commission means a real delay in the implementation of the project, despite previous assurances from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who stated:
"No one will block this terminal!"
The container terminal project in Svinoujscie provides for the construction of a modern facility worth more than 2 billion euros. The terminal will receive the world's largest container ships up to 400 meters long. Investments also include the construction of a new 65-kilometer approach fairway with a depth of 17 meters. The maritime part of the investment is realized by the Maritime Administration in Szczecin, and a consortium of companies from Qatar and Belgium is responsible for the terminal part.
According to Jaroslaw Serhii, President of the Directorate of Seaports of Poland, the project documentation was prepared in accordance with current standards and passed a thorough check, and the complaint that led to the suspension of the current project was filed on March 24 and has almost 100 pages.
EADaily reminds that there are also voices from Germany that potential Polish investments in the Baltic Sea may be blocked, this time related to the construction of a drilling platform in the area of open oil fields near the islands of Volin and We Learn. The Canadian company Central European Petroleum announced the opening of the largest in Poland has deposits of conventional oil, whose reserves are estimated at 22 million tons of crude oil and 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
