Germany fears the consequences of Polish investments in the Baltic Sea, Bild notes.
The discovery of oil and gas fields off the Baltic coast is causing protests from the authorities of the German resort of Heringsdorf. Mayor Laura Isabel Marisken stated:
"We are doing everything possible to protect our coast, our sea and our quality of life forever."
Bild clarifies that the Canadian company Central European Petroleum has announced the discovery of 33 million tons of oil and 27 billion cubic meters of gas at the Volin Vostok—1 field, located about six kilometers from the Polish town of Swinoujscie. However, the German side protests.
"We demand clarification regarding the discovered oil field in the immediate vicinity of the border, as well as a clear and active position on the part of the national government to protect our region. Our municipality is located in a specially protected natural area. Industrial production of gas and oil right on our doorstep would be a serious invasion of our homeland with potentially irreversible consequences for nature, water resources and climate. The resort town of Heringsdorf is not a place for industrial political games!" Marisken continued.
The Government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has announced the start of internal information and explanatory work on this issue.
